Lillian Mook Mandyck

Lillian Mook Mandyck passed into her Savior’s arms on Sunday, May 19, 2024. She was 94.

Lillian was born to James A. Mook, Jr. and Mildred McTeer Mook in Tampa, Florida on June 8, 1929. She graduated from Plant High School and Florida State University. Lillian taught in Tampa public schools and also for a Department of Defense Dependents school in Mannheim, West Germany. She completed her teaching career at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta, Georgia.

In November 1961, Lillian was teaching in South Bend, Indiana when she met her husband and the love of her life, Lawrence Michael Mandyck, a law student at the University of Notre Dame. They were engaged by February of the following year, and were married in May 1963 in Alexandria, Virginia. Larry Mandyck was a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the new Mr. and Mrs. Mandyck were assigned to Atlanta, Georgia, where their daughter Maura was born in 1965. The family moved to Nashville, TN where baby sister Kathleen joined the family in 1972, but moved back to Atlanta in 1975 and lived on Hillswick Ct. in Sandy Springs and attended St. Jude’s Catholic Church for the next 40 plus years.

Lillian Mandyck was an artist, a craftswoman, a gardener, a volunteer, and a cook. She had a particular gift for friendship, and maintained close ties with her Chi Omega sorority sisters, her friends from the Junior League, neighbors, and sometimes anyone she struck up a conversation with in line at the store! She truly never met a stranger.

Lillian loved dogs and cats, Atlanta Braves baseball, and dessert. She was a gentle spirit but had a quick wit. She read voraciously her whole life long and filled many volumes of book journals with titles and her reflections. She also jotted thoughts, happenings, and Bible verses on scraps of paper, which her family will continue to discover, likely for years to come. One scrap, for example, noted that on Aug. 30, the Braves won 2-1, and also contained a verse from Jeremiah: “For I will refresh the weary soul; every soul that languishes, I will replenish.”

Lillian is survived by daughter Maura Mandyck of Mobile, AL; daughter Kathleen Mandyck Perry and son-in-law Charles Perry of Acworth, GA; and nephew Michael Rase of Tampa, FL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Mildred Ann Mook Rase Loomis and brother-in-law Al Loomis; and Larry Mandyck, her husband of 48 years, who died in September 2011.

She left us this verse in her address book: “This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it!” We mourn our loss, but rejoice in Lillian’s beautiful life.

A funeral Mass will be held for the family at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Sandy Springs, Georgia, and Lillian will be interred with her husband at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
