Helen Deason Smith of Rome, GA passed away peacefully on July 4, 2024.

Helen was born in Nauvoo, Alabama on September 26, 1929, daughter of the late John Powell Deason and Berniece Moore Deason. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Harold Smith and her brother, John Deason. She is survived by her children Connie Hyde (Dennis), Anne Snyder (Bruce), Cindy Dye (Tom), Rod Smith (Michael Rose), grandchildren Aimee Whitt (Andy), Carrie Holliman (Brent), Ashley Snyder, Harrison, Connor and Shelby Dye, great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Caroline, and Sarah Wallace Whitt, JuliAnna Hills (Peter) and Tristen Holliman, four great-great grandchildren Louis, Mary Clare, Helen Marie and Max Hills and many nieces and nephews.

Helen attended the University of Alabama where she met and married the love of her life, Harold. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she became an educator for over thirty-five years, teaching and counseling in the Floyd County Schools and Rome City Schools. Helen was an active member of First Baptist Church of Rome, GA.

Helen and Harold raised their four children in the Celanese Village along Chatillon Road in Rome. She enjoyed attending the Celanese Village Kids Reunions reconnecting with students, life-long friends and neighbors.

Helen was an avid tennis player, contract bridge competitor and graceful ballroom dancer. She loved organizing social trips and cruises focused on bridge and ballroom dancing. She never met a stranger and modeled the most positive outlook on life.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the many caregivers at The Spires of Berry and Winthrop Court for their sincere and dedicated care and dignity shown to Helen over the last six years.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of First Baptist Church, Rome, GA on Wednesday, July 10, at 1:30 p.m. The interment will be held in Jasper, AL at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Rome, GA.
