Charles Maxwell Fowler, a dedicated family man, accomplished textile industry professional, and active member of his community, passed away on July 2, 2023, at the age of 87 in Rome, GA. Charles was born on March 19, 1936, in Pickens, South Carolina, to Albert Woodrow Fowler and Mamie Lou Spearman Fowler.

Charles began his academic journey at Liberty High School, where he graduated in 1954. He went on to pursue a degree in Textile Management from Clemson University, graduating in 1958. His passion for textiles led him to work in the industry throughout his entire career. Charles held positions at renowned companies such as Dan River, Burlington Industries, and eventually Galey & Lord. He retired as the Vice President of Greige Manufacturing with Galey and Lord, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and expertise.

Aside from his successful professional life, Charles also had a passion for exploring new places. He lived in various locations, including Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and even Ireland. During his time in Europe, he had the opportunity to visit several countries, including England, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.

Throughout his life, Charles actively participated in numerous organizations, generously giving his time and expertise. He served as a member of the Rome Boys and Girls Club Board, Trustee of Redmond Regional Medical Center, Board Member of Citizens First Bank, and Board Member of Shorter University. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of Deacon at 2nd Avenue Baptist Church.

Charles proudly served his country as a former Captain in the US Army. His dedication and service to his nation were a testament to his character and love for his country.

Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Nita Fowler (Clara Juanita), who passed away on December 2, 1997. He was also predeceased by his parents, Albert Woodrow Fowler (May 2006) and Mamie Lou Spearman Fowler (July 1997), as well as his sisters, Pat Rollins (October 2009) and Sandra Hendricks (July 2019).

He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Fowler of Rome, Georgia, with whom he shared many cherished moments. Charles will be forever remembered by his three children, Michele Branham of Columbia, South Carolina; Melanie Grace of Columbus, Georgia; and Charles “Tony” Fowler of Rome, Georgia. He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Tamatha Porter of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Leanna Thacker of Rome, Georgia.

Charles will be also fondly remembered by his four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his two brothers, Donald Fowler of Brooksville, Florida, and David Fowler of Liberty, South Carolina.

A memorial service to celebrate Charles Maxwell Fowler’s life will be held on July 15, 2023, at 2nd Avenue Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia. The visitation will take place from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by the service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The burial will be a private ceremony for the family.

Charles touched the lives of many through his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
